The Story
Villa Serendib was built in 1924 for a Dutch spice merchant whose trade ran between the Galle Fort warehouses and the pepper estates of the highlands. For nearly a century the building stood largely unchanged — its vaulted ceilings, original terrazzo floors, and deep teak shutters preserving the silence of another era.
When the Ceylontecture founders acquired the property in 2019, the brief was simple: restore what time had preserved, and introduce only what the building itself invited. The plunge pool occupies what was once a cistern courtyard. The kitchen has been re-fitted with contemporary appliances, but the original clay-tile backsplash and the carved stone sink remain.
Today Villa Serendib sits at the quiet edge of the fort's residential quarter — close enough to the rampart walk, the galleries, and the restaurants to feel connected, far enough from the tourist thoroughfare to feel entirely private.
