Lagoon House occupies a singular position: a narrow strip of land between the Bentota Lagoon and the open Indian Ocean, accessible by road or private boat from the jetty. The property's award-winning architecture by a Colombo-based studio captures every breeze while flooding interior spaces with the soft luminescence reflected off the water.
Five bedrooms are distributed across the main house and a separate garden pavilion, each one a composition in whitewashed stone, local textiles, and curated antiques from the Pettah markets. The 15-metre infinity pool runs parallel to the lagoon, creating the illusion of boundless water.
The Bentota River is the villa's backyard adventure zone — canoeing past mangroves at dawn, spotting monitor lizards on the riverbanks, water-skiing on the lagoon. Evenings are spent on the ocean-facing deck, where the catch of the day is grilled and the Southern Cross emerges above the horizon. The Story
Lagoon House was designed by a Colombo-based architecture studio and recognised with a national design award on completion. It occupies an exceptional strip of land — the width of the property is barely 80 metres, yet it spans from the Bentota Lagoon on one side to the Indian Ocean beach on the other.
The brief from the original owners was to create a house that disappeared into its landscape. The result is a structure of full-width pivot doors, whitewashed lime render, and overhanging eaves designed to dissolve in the tropical light. The 15-metre infinity pool is positioned to create a single unbroken water line from pool to lagoon.
Interiors are composed with deliberate restraint: antique pieces from the Pettah street markets in Colombo, hand-woven textiles from a family workshop in Kandy, and stone floors sourced from a disused colonial-era building in Matara.
